Dutch Parliament Approves Plan to Reduce Military Dependence on Israel

AhlulBayt News Agency: The Dutch parliament has approved a plan to reduce the Netherlands’ reliance on military and security imports from Israel. The decision comes ahead of the swearing-in of a new government this month, with two of the three coalition parties backing the measure.

Parliament stated that “it is not desirable for the Netherlands to be dependent on industries involved in war crimes.” In recent years, the country purchased Israeli military equipment worth around two billion euros.

Haaretz cited a Dutch official as stating that the government will now be required to report to parliament on the steps it is taking to reduce Israeli imports. The official added that while immediate effects may be limited, the policy could produce significant long-term consequences.

Experts say the decision aims to strengthen the Netherlands’ “strategic autonomy” in security and defense. Discussions are also underway about reducing dependency on US security imports, reflecting a broader review of the country’s defense supply chains.

The move marks a shift in Dutch military procurement policy, signaling increased scrutiny of arms sources and a focus on ethical considerations in international defense trade.
